Vtg Hand Painted Wood Plates Pair Swedish Valkommen Tack Sa Mycket Signed 8 in

Matched pair of hand-painted wooden plates with Swedish greetings, sold together as found.

One reads Välkommen (Swedish for “welcome”), the other Tack så mycket (“thank you very much”). Each is painted with a rosy-cheeked child in Swedish folk dress, framed by a red scrolling border and small blue and red flowers. Both are signed “Helen” in the paint on the front, and both carry the surname “Crandall” in pencil on the reverse.

A little history. Swedish folk art had a long run in American homes, particularly across the Upper Midwest, where Scandinavian immigrant communities kept the motifs and the greetings in everyday use. Greeting plates were a standard part of that. Phrases like Välkommen, Tack så mycket, and Var så god appeared on commercially produced Swedish-motif housewares through the mid-20th century, including wooden plates from decorators such as Berggren.

This pair sits on the handmade side of that tradition. Both plates carry the same printed green foil label from the woodenware supplier, meaning they were bought as plain turned blanks and decorated by hand afterward, by the same painter, as an intended set. That points to a home or small-studio piece rather than factory output, which is why the brushwork, the lettering, and the signature vary slightly between the two.

Measurements: Each plate is 8 inches in diameter and 5/8 inch deep.

Condition: Good vintage condition. Both plates show surface scratches and light scuffing to the front and back consistent with age and handling, shown in the photos. Original supplier label present on each reverse but partially torn, with residue from a later price sticker. No cracks, splits, or warping.
