Set of two vintage Yellowstone National Park souvenir plates with 22K gold decoration on white ceramic. Sourced together.
Larger plate — 10” diameter, 3/4” deep
Wide gold rim with two bands of filigree scrollwork, stepped down to a white band with a fine dark chain border. The center transfer scene is printed in sepia and gold, with “Yellowstone National Park” in Old English script across the middle. Labeled vignettes: Tower Falls with a bear at lower left, Old Faithful erupting at center, Fishing Bridge with a second bear at right, and Cleopatra Terrace along the bottom.
Backstamped with the artist’s palette and S, “Crest-O-Gold,” “Made in U.S.A.” That mark belongs to Sabin Industries of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, founded by Samuel Sabin. Sabin did not manufacture china — the firm bought plain blanks from other potteries, applied its own 22K gold decoration, and sold them to retailers and trading-stamp companies. Circa 1950s.
Smaller plate — 7 1/4” diameter, 5/8” deep
Gold rim with a wide band of delicate floral filigree on white. Center transfer of Old Faithful erupting, printed in sepia, labeled “Old Faithful Geyser” and “Yellowstone National Park” in hand-lettered style.
The reverse carries printed descriptive text: “OLD FAITHFUL GEYSER — This geyser erupts every sixty-three minutes without variation Winter and Summer. Day and Night.” That claim dates the piece. Old Faithful’s intervals averaged about 66 1/2 minutes in 1939 and have lengthened since, now averaging roughly 74 minutes with a range of 60 to 110.
The smaller plate carries no maker’s mark. Only the larger plate is Sabin-stamped.
Condition
Pre-owned, sold as decorative pieces. Please review all photos closely — they are part of the description.
Smaller plate: crazing throughout, heavy and readily visible across both the front field and the entire reverse. The gold rim shows a pronounced uneven iridescent color shift, with patches of red, orange, amber and violet around the band, and some thinning of the gold at the outer edge. Scattered dark specks in the glaze.
Larger plate: gold rim shows wear and darkened areas, most noticeable along one section of the outer band. Scattered dark specks and small inclusions in the glaze, front and reverse. A few stray gold flecks in the white field near the center script, consistent with original decorating overspray. Reverse is clean and the backstamp is crisp and fully legible.
Neither plate shows significant utensil scratching; both appear to have been kept for display.
Display and use
Both are shallow rim plates suitable for wall display or a plate stand. Neither has a factory hanger hole; stand and hanger not included.
Decorative use only. The metallic gold decoration is not microwave or dishwasher safe.
